DrainDispatch is a referral service, not a plumbing contractor. We connect homeowners with independent, licensed plumbing contractors through our partner network. We do not perform plumbing work, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call. Calls are routed on partner coverage and bids, not on a quality ranking.

A kitchen sink blocks differently from every other drain in the house, because what goes down it is different. Fats and oils leave the sink as warm liquid and cool into a solid coating a few feet along the branch line. That coating then catches coffee grounds, starch and food fibre until the pipe cannot pass water.

How a contractor actually diagnoses it

  1. They check whether both basins are affected. Both means the blockage is past the tee where they join.
  2. They check whether the dishwasher backs up into the sink — that points at the same shared branch.
  3. They remove and inspect the P-trap first, because it is quick and it is the blockage about a third of the time.
  4. If the trap is clear, they cable the branch line toward the stack — typically 15 to 25 feet.

Three ways this actually fails

Grease coating the branch line

The classic kitchen failure. Builds over months, then blocks suddenly the day something fibrous goes down.

Garbage disposal debris

Starchy waste (rice, pasta, potato peel) expands and binds. Disposals grind; they do not make food soluble.

A failed or wrongly-fitted trap arm

A trap arm without enough fall, or one that sags, holds water and solids permanently. If a sink blocks every few weeks from new, suspect the install rather than the habits.

Questions people ask

How do I find clogged kitchen sink near me?

Call the number on this page and give us your town or ZIP code. We match it against partner coverage and connect you with an independent licensed contractor who works that area. We do not charge you anything — the contractor sets their own price.

Will boiling water and dish soap clear it?

Sometimes, on a fresh, purely greasy clog in a metal waste line. Do not pour boiling water into a PVC trap — it can soften the joints. And if the sink is already full of standing water, boiling water never reaches the clog.

Is baking soda and vinegar worth trying?

It fizzes, which people find convincing, but the reaction is spent within inches of the drain opening and it has no meaningful effect on a grease clog several feet down the branch.

Should I use a chemical drain cleaner?

On a kitchen sink it is the wrong tool for the commonest cause — most chemical cleaners target hair and organic soft clogs, not congealed fat. If you have already used one and it did not work, tell the contractor, because there is now caustic liquid standing in the line they are about to open.

Why does only one side of the double sink drain?

Because the blockage is past the tee where the two basins join, and water from the blocked side is finding the path of least resistance into the other basin.

Can I put grease down the drain if I run hot water?

No. Hot water only moves the problem further along the line, where it cools and deposits anyway — usually somewhere far more expensive to reach.

How long does clearing a kitchen sink take?

Usually under an hour if it is the trap or the near branch. Longer if the cable has to run to the stack.

It keeps blocking every few months. Why?

Repeat blockage in the same branch usually means either sustained grease loading or a physical fault in the pipe — a sag, a bad fall, or a partial obstruction the cable punches through rather than removes. A camera is the way to tell.
