How a contractor actually diagnoses it
- They establish whether it hums, is silent, or runs but does not drain. Each points somewhere different.
- Humming with no rotation means the flywheel is jammed — mechanical, not a drain problem.
- Silent means power: the reset button on the underside, or the breaker.
- Runs but does not drain, or backs up into the second basin, means the blockage is downstream in the branch line, and the disposal is innocent.
Three ways this actually fails
Starchy waste binding downstream
Rice, pasta and potato peel expand and knit together into a paste a few feet along. The most frequent cause of a disposal-side backup.
Fibrous waste wrapping the impellers
Celery, artichoke, corn husk. This jams the mechanism rather than blocking the pipe, and it presents as a hum.
A shared branch blockage
When water backs up into the other basin, the fault is past the tee that joins them. Nothing done at the disposal will help.

It hums but does not turn. What is that?
The flywheel is jammed. There is a hex socket on the underside of most units and a wrench usually supplied with them — turning it frees the jam. Never put a hand into a disposal, even switched off.
It is completely silent.
That is power, not plumbing. There is a reset button on the underside of the unit; if that does not do it, check the breaker.
Why does water come up in the other basin?
Because the blockage is past the point where the two basins join. Both are draining into the same restricted pipe, and water takes the easier route.
What should never go in?
Fat, oil, rice, pasta, potato peel, coffee grounds, eggshells, celery, corn husk and anything fibrous. That list covers the great majority of disposal-related blockages.
Should I run hot or cold water?
Cold, while grinding and for a good twenty seconds after. Cold keeps fats solid so they are ground and carried away rather than melting and coating the pipe further along.
Does ice sharpen the blades?
There are no blades — there are blunt impellers that throw waste against a grind ring. Ice helps knock residue off the ring, which is worth doing, but it is not sharpening anything.
Is the dishwasher connected to this?
Usually, yes. The dishwasher drain hose commonly ties into the disposal, which is why a blocked kitchen branch shows up as dirty water in the dishwasher.
