DrainDispatch is a referral service, not a plumbing contractor. We connect homeowners with independent, licensed plumbing contractors through our partner network. We do not perform plumbing work, we do not set prices, and we never charge homeowners anything — the contractors in our network pay us when we route them a call. Calls are routed on partner coverage and bids, not on a quality ranking.

A washing machine discharges thirty or more gallons in under a minute, under pump pressure. That surge is the hardest test any branch line in the house ever gets, which is why a partly restricted line will overflow at the laundry standpipe long before it causes trouble anywhere else.

How a contractor actually diagnoses it

  1. They watch a full discharge cycle, because the fault only appears under load.
  2. They check the standpipe height and depth — too short and it overflows regardless of any blockage.
  3. They check whether other fixtures react during the discharge, which points at a shared branch or the main.
  4. They cable the laundry branch, which typically carries lint, detergent residue and fabric fibre rather than grease.

Three ways this actually fails

Lint and fibre build-up

Every wash sheds fibre. Over years it felts together with detergent residue into a dense mat, and no filter catches it on the way out.

An undersized or short standpipe

Codes specify a minimum standpipe height and trap depth for a reason. Get either wrong and the pump simply overwhelms it.

A restricted shared branch

If the shower or floor drain backs up while the machine discharges, the fault is downstream of both and the laundry is just where it shows.

Questions people ask

How do I find laundry drain clog near me?

Call the number on this page and give us your town or ZIP code. We match it against partner coverage and connect you with an independent licensed contractor who works that area. We do not charge you anything — the contractor sets their own price.

Why only when the machine drains?

Because that is the only time the line sees that volume at that speed. A restriction that normal use never notices is fully exposed by a pump discharge.

Would a lint trap on the hose help?

Yes, more than most people expect. A mesh trap on the discharge hose catches a meaningful share of the fibre, and it costs almost nothing. It needs cleaning regularly or it becomes the blockage.

The shower backs up when I do laundry.

They share a branch that is blocked downstream of both. That is a branch or main line job, not a laundry one.

Is the standpipe supposed to be that tall?

Plumbing codes set a minimum height and trap depth. A standpipe that is too short cannot absorb the surge and will overflow even with a perfectly clear line.

Can I pour drain cleaner down the standpipe?

It is a poor fit for felted lint, and it leaves caustic liquid standing where someone will shortly be working. Cabling is the right tool here.

Does detergent make it worse?

Excess detergent and fabric softener leave residue that binds lint together. Using the dose the machine actually needs genuinely reduces build-up.

What does it cost?

Published national ranges put laundry drain clearing at $150–$250 (HomeGuide). Context only, not a quote.
